About
This small, graceful deciduous tree can reach heights of up to 10-12 metres, often with a slender habit and drooping branches. It features alternate, pinnate leaves with rounded-elliptic leaflets. Its distinctive fruits are long, slender, triangular pods, resembling drumsticks, which contain oily, winged seeds. Valued for its highly nutritious leaves, pods, flowers, and roots, it serves as both a food source and an ingredient in traditional medicine.
Where it works in Kilifi
Moringa thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, and prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soils, tolerating a range of pH from slightly acidic to neutral. It is well-suited as a specimen tree, for creating shade, as a living fence, or integrated into agroforestry systems, particularly in Kilifi's coastal, arid, and semi-arid regions. For general garden planting, space trees 2-3 metres apart; for dense leaf production, closer spacing can be adopted.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, Moringa oleifera can reach up to five metres in its first year. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant, though young plants require regular watering until their trunks become woody (2-3 times per week for the first few months). Mature trees can survive long dry spells, but consistent moisture supports better leaf production. It is sensitive to frost, losing leaves below 4°C, but established trees can regrow from the roots if mulched; ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
