About

This shrub or small tree typically grows 3–12 m tall, occasionally reaching up to 24 m, and features grey bark on older branches with prominent lenticels. Its elliptic to ovate leaves, measuring 10–14 cm long, are firm-textured and have glandular-crenulate margins. Small, whitish flowers are borne in congested cymose inflorescences, developing into subglobose, densely hairy fruits approximately 6–10 mm in diameter.

Where it works in Kilifi

Thriving as an understory component in lowland tropical rainforests, this species is well-suited for partially shaded areas in a Kilifi-coast garden. It prefers well-drained soils, particularly near watercourses, and can be used as a specimen or for restoration plantings.

Growing notes

This tropical African species grows best in moist, well-drained soil and tolerates partial shade once established. While no specific growth rate is documented, it is adaptable to humid tropical settings.
