About

This deciduous or evergreen canopy tree reaches up to 30-35m, featuring a straight, cylindrical trunk and a wide, spreading crown. The grey to greyish-brown bark scales into rounded pits, revealing a reddish inner bark with sticky exudate. Its compound leaves have smaller, slightly hairy leaflets, unique to this variety, and produce small, blackish-purple, edible but resinous fruits when ripe.

Where it works in Kilifi

An excellent choice for lowland forest restoration and large garden landscapes along the Kilifi coast, this fast-growing pioneer species thrives in full sun to partial shade. Plant as a specimen for canopy shade, in living fences, or for soil improvement, allowing ample space for its spreading crown.

Growing notes

A fast-growing species, it establishes quickly and requires moderate to high water during establishment, tolerating various conditions once mature. It can be coppiced or pollarded for management. Sawdust may cause allergic reactions.
