About

Julbernardia magnistipulata is an evergreen tree, typically growing 10–25 metres tall with a straight, buttressed trunk, though it can also occur as a shrub. It is distinguished by its large, leaf-like stipule-lobes and smooth, grey to brown bark on mature trees. The cream to white flowers develop into obovate-oblong or oblong pods, 5.5–14 cm long, containing dark brown seeds.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species is native to coastal evergreen bushlands and lowland forests in southern Kenya, including the Kilifi District, thriving from sea level to 1,150 metres. It can be planted as a specimen or shade tree, contributing to coastal forest restoration in sunny locations.

Growing notes

As an evergreen, it is well-suited to humid coastal zones with seasonal rainfall variations. Propagation is primarily by seed, which disperses explosively from mature pods. This species is listed as Vulnerable, highlighting the importance of protecting natural stands and discouraging unsustainable exploitation.
