About

A spiny evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 6-13 metres tall, with prominent thorns up to 2cm long on corky outgrowths along its branches. It has alternate, imparipinnate leaves and produces small, fleshy, globose berries that ripen from red to black and are edible. This species is native to tropical Africa, found in dry evergreen forests, wooded grasslands, riverine areas, and coastal bushlands.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in hot, humid coastal conditions and is suitable for forming dense hedges or living fences, particularly on eroded soils where its wide-spreading roots can help. It can also be cultivated as a shade tree, demonstrating tolerance to partial shade.

Growing notes

A fairly fast-growing shrub that coppices easily, requiring regular pruning to maintain its form and prevent it from becoming overgrown. Once established, it is notably drought-tolerant, adapting to areas with annual rainfall ranging from 150 mm to 2000 mm. Its spiny nature makes it an effective barrier.
