About

Ficus wakefieldii is a medium to large tree, capable of reaching up to 25 metres tall, often growing epiphytically or lithophytically with a wide crown. Its leathery leaves are broadly ovate to suborbicular with a cordate base, and it produces sessile, subglobose figs, approximately 1.5-2 cm in diameter, which are densely white to yellow pubescent. This species is notable for its recently discovered ability to convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into limestone within its trunk and surrounding soil, offering a unique carbon sequestration method.

Where it works in Kilifi

This tropical fig thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, making it suitable as a specimen or shade tree in a Kilifi-coast garden. It also serves as an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, providing food and shelter for local fauna.

Growing notes

Ficus wakefieldii grows best in warm temperatures, ideally between 15-30°C, and requires good humidity. Once established, ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, watering when the top inch or two of soil has dried. This species can be propagated from seeds or cuttings.
