About

This medium-sized tree can also grow as a liane or shrub, often starting as an epiphyte. It features leaves arranged in spirals, typically elliptic to oblong, and bears ovoid to subglobose figs, 2.5–4 cm in diameter, on spurs along its branches or trunk. Naturally found in diverse habitats including riverine forests, gallery forests, rainforests, and coastal bushlands across tropical Africa.

Where it works in Kilifi

Given its adaptability to coastal bushland and wet tropical biomes, this tree is suitable as a specimen or for shade and restoration plantings in a Kilifi-coast garden. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring protection from intense direct sunlight, and prefers well-draining, amended soil.

Growing notes

Ficus species generally prefer consistent warm temperatures (15-22°C) and high humidity, requiring protection from cold drafts. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering, ensuring the soil dries out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
