About
This semi-deciduous tree grows up to 15 metres tall, forming a rounded, spreading crown. Its smooth, leathery leaves are dull green, emerging bright red-brown with conspicuous yellow veins. It has pale grey bark and produces small, edible (though not always palatable) figs that ripen from white to purple or yellowish-brown.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for large gardens and restoration on rocky outcrops, where it can be a majestic specimen or shade tree. Due to its aggressive, rock-splitting root system, avoid planting near structures or paving.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, the Red-leaved Fig is drought-resistant once established, thriving in full sun and well-draining, even rocky, soil. Water regularly in spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Its leaves are reported to be toxic to cattle.
