About

This succulent shrub or small tree, native to Kenya and Tanzania, thrives on coral cliffs, limestone outcrops, and dry, rocky areas. It features upright green or slightly brown stems, which mature into a woody trunk, lined with prominent paired spines. Small, discreet yellowish to greenish flowers, called cyathia, appear during warmer months.

This plant flourishes in full sun to bright filtered light and requires well-drained, sandy or rocky soil, ideal for Kilifi's coastal environment. Its striking architectural form makes it an excellent specimen plant or a feature in a succulent garden, particularly on natural rock formations.

Growing notes

Once established, this species exhibits moderate to rapid growth, preferring arid, frost-free conditions. It is drought-tolerant and requires watering only when the soil has completely dried out. Handle with care due to its prickly stems and toxic, skin-irritating latex sap.
