About

This critically endangered, cactus-like succulent tree can reach up to 30 metres tall with a single trunk up to 50 cm in diameter. It has thickened stems for water storage and produces small flowers clustered in cyathia. The tree yields a milky latex sap and its dry wood is traditionally burned as a mosquito repellent.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this tree thrives in well-drained, sandy soils, tolerating periods of inundation and preferring full sun. It serves as an excellent specimen or for restoration efforts, requiring ample space for its mature size.

Growing notes

Growth is slow, and propagation can be challenging, though research institutes are developing techniques. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, adapting to environments with variable moisture. Handle with care, as its milky sap can be caustic.
