About

This succulent tree can reach heights of 12–20 metres, forming a large, broadly rounded crown from persistent, erect branches. Its fleshy, green-grey stems are typically 4-angled, constricted into oblong segments, and produce an abundant, toxic milky latex. The variety *bilocularis* is distinguished by its two-celled fruits, unlike the more common three-celled fruits of the typical variety.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for full sun, this striking tree thrives in dry deciduous and evergreen open wooded grasslands, tolerating sandy, clay, and coral soils typical of the Kilifi coast. It serves well as a specimen tree, for providing shade, or as a robust live fence in gardens and landscapes, especially in semi-arid areas.

Growing notes

A fast-growing species, it can be propagated by seeds or stem cuttings, with cuttings requiring a few days to dry before planting in well-drained soil, preferably at the end of the rainy season. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant but susceptible to rot from overwatering. All parts of the plant contain a poisonous milky latex that can cause severe skin irritation and blindness if it comes into contact with eyes, so caution is advised during handling.
