About

Dracaena fragrans is a slow-growing shrub native to tropical Africa, often reaching up to 15 metres in its natural habitat. It features glossy green, lanceolate leaves, which can be up to 150 cm long and typically droop with age. The plant produces highly fragrant, tiny white-yellow flowers in terminal panicles, occasionally followed by orange-red berries, though these are rarely seen on cultivated indoor specimens.

Where it works in Kilifi

This plant thrives outdoors in frost-free climates and is suitable for Kilifi gardens in partial shade or filtered sunlight, ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade. It can be utilised as a specimen, screen, or hedge, and requires well-draining, organically rich soil. Direct midday sun should be avoided to prevent leaf scorch.

Growing notes

Dracaena fragrans is slow-growing and, once established, is relatively drought-tolerant, but prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry, reducing frequency during cooler months to prevent root rot. It is sensitive to fluoride and salts in tap water, which can lead to brown leaf tips, so filtered or distilled water is recommended. The plant is a frost-free tropical perennial, performing best in temperatures between 15-24°C (60-75°F), and is toxic to pets if ingested.
