Dodonaea viscosa is an evergreen shrub typically growing 1-3 metres tall, though it can reach up to 9 metres as a small tree. Its narrow, oblanceolate leaves are dark green and often sticky, an attribute reflected in its species name. Inconspicuous yellow-green flowers lead to distinctive papery, three-winged capsules, which can be green, pink, or red before ripening to a tan or brown colour. This versatile plant readily colonises disturbed areas and tolerates salt, drought, and strong winds.

This species is ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, thriving in full sun to light shade and a wide range of well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky coastal areas. It excels as a hedge, screen, or windbreak, offering excellent protection against strong coastal winds and for dune stabilisation. For a dense hedge, plants can be spaced closer, while individual specimens benefit from at least 1.5-2 metres.
