About

This medium-sized tree grows up to 25 metres tall, typically found in dry evergreen and riverine forests along the East African coast. It has smooth, grey-brown bark and produces white to cream flowers. The dark brown, rounded pods contain an edible, whitish pulp that can be used to make a refreshing drink.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes, this tree thrives in moist lowland forest conditions and coastal sandy limestone soils. It can serve as an excellent shade tree or be used in restoration projects, growing to form part of the canopy.

Growing notes

This species forms a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, which enables it to fix atmospheric nitrogen, benefiting surrounding plants. No specific hazards are known for this tree.
