About

Cryptolepis nigrescens is a liana native to West Tropical Africa, extending to Uganda and Angola, where it thrives in wet tropical biomes. This climbing plant is characterised by its thin stems, shiny bright green leaves, and subtle yellow-greenish flowers. Its roots are typically yellow and have been traditionally used to produce a yellow dye.

Where it works in Kilifi

This liana is ideal for training on trellises, pergolas, or allowing it to climb up mature trees in a Kilifi garden. It prefers well-draining soil and partial sun to bright, indirect light, with protection from prolonged direct sun. Avoid planting in swampy or waterlogged areas.

Growing notes

Cryptolepis nigrescens is a vigorous climber, suggesting a fast growth rate. Once established, it is drought tolerant and prefers to dry out between watering, typically requiring water every three weeks. It thrives in warm environments, ideally between 24-29°C.
