About
Croton talaeporos is a shrub or multi-stemmed tree, typically growing 2–10 metres tall. It features elliptic-ovate or triangular-ovate leaves, 4–14 x 3–10 cm, with crenate-serrate margins and two glands at the base. Terminal racemes bear sparsely stellate-pubescent flowers, leading to subglobose fruits measuring 26–28 x 22–25 mm, containing large seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is indigenous to coastal bushland and wooded grasslands on sand, at elevations from sea level to 100 metres, making it well-suited for restoration or as a specimen tree in Kilifi. It can grow on a wide range of soils, preferring well-drained conditions, and thrives in partial shade.
Growing notes
Crotons are generally slow to moderate growers, appreciating warm, humid conditions. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, reducing frequency in winter, and note that established plants show some drought tolerance. The plant's sap can be irritating to the skin, and its seeds are toxic if ingested, acting as a strong purgative.
