About
This perennial shrub typically grows 2-4 metres tall, identifiable by its grey, roughish bark, reddish-brown hairy branchlets, and lanceolate to elliptic leaves that are dark green above and silvery-white below, emitting a sweet scent when crushed. It produces small, pale creamy-yellow flowers in compact heads, which attract insects, and later develops yellow-grey, hairy, three-lobed fruit capsules. Native to East African bushland and coastal dune forests on sandy soils, it is also noted for its use in stabilising sand dunes.
Where it works in Kilifi
In a Kilifi-coast garden, this shrub is ideal for sunny to partially shaded spots, especially in well-drained, sandy soils, fitting well in coastal dune forest themes. It makes an attractive specimen or hedge plant due to its bicoloured leaves and can be planted 2-3 feet apart, also serving well in restoration for dune stabilisation.
Growing notes
This evergreen shrub has a moderate growth rate and, once established, is water-wise, tolerating dry conditions while preferring consistent moisture without being waterlogged. Handle with care, as the sap can irritate skin and plant parts contain toxins if ingested.
