About

Croton kinondoensis is a shrub species native to the sacred Kaya Kinondo Forest in coastal Kenya, primarily found in seasonally dry tropical areas. It is characterised by opposite leaves featuring 3-7(-9) pairs of lateral veins and a distinctive deeply cordate base. The plant produces a raceme-like thyrse inflorescence with pistillate flowers that have vestigial petals. Phytochemical studies have identified compounds from its twigs and leaves that possess antibacterial activity.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in bright, indirect light to partial shade, and can tolerate full sun if kept consistently moist. It prefers well-draining soil and can be incorporated into a Kilifi-coast garden as a specimen plant, for restoration purposes, or as part of a hedge. Avoid high pH rock soils.

Growing notes

Croton kinondoensis is considered a slow to moderate growing shrub, typically adding 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) in height annually, reaching maturity in 2-3 years. Once established, it exhibits some drought tolerance but benefits from consistent, regular watering, allowing the topsoil to dry slightly between applications. It prefers warm temperatures between 15-30°C and requires protection from drafts and temperatures below 10°C. The milky sap may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
