About
This large deciduous tree grows 10-30 metres tall with a wide, spreading crown and greyish bark that peels in strips. It produces showy, scentless yellow-orange flowers with prominent stamens, appearing with new leaves. The fruit is an edible, golden-yellow, fleshy drupe, rich in vitamin C, which ripens on the ground.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for large gardens and landscapes along the Kilifi coast, this tree provides excellent shade. Plant in full sun in well-draining, loamy soil, particularly in riverine or swamp forest areas.
Growing notes
Initially fast-growing, its rate slows with maturity. It prefers consistently moist, not waterlogged, soil and warm, humid conditions once established. Fresh seeds germinate easily but have a short viability period.
