About
This small to medium-sized deciduous tree can reach up to 7-10 metres in height, forming a rounded crown. It is easily recognised by its dark, often deeply furrowed bark and bright yellow, sweetly scented flowers, which typically emerge before the leaves. Distinctive long, cylindrical, brown-black pods, measuring 30-90 cm, follow the bloom and can persist on the tree for many months.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal as an ornamental or shade tree in Kilifi-coast gardens, thriving in full sun and well-draining loamy or clayey soils. It naturally occurs in low altitude bushland, open woodland, and on riverbanks in East Africa, including Kilifi District.
Growing notes
This species is moderately fast-growing and drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal water. Young plants are frost tender and need protection. Seeds benefit from overnight soaking in warm water prior to sowing.
