About

Brachylaena huillensis is a small to medium-sized tree, sometimes reaching up to 35 meters tall, with a fluted and often curved grey bark. Its distinct leaves are green above and silvery-white and felty beneath, and it produces small, creamy-white flowers. The wood is highly valued for its aromatic scent, density, and exceptional resistance to decay and termites.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in full sun and prefers light, free-draining sandy or red coastal soils. It is ideal as an ornamental or boundary tree in Kilifi gardens, contributing to soil stabilisation with its deep root system. Plant specimens 5-8 metres apart to allow for mature growth.

Growing notes

Brachylaena huillensis is a slow-growing tree in natural conditions, but growth can be fair to fast on good soils, particularly in plantations. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, requiring regular watering only during its establishment phase. Seedlings perform best with some initial shade to prevent scorching and poor stem development.
