About

This large shrub or small tree is endemic to the coastal forests of Kenya, typically found along riverbanks at elevations of 30-240 metres. It features distinctive bilobed leaves, measuring 3.5–12.5 cm long, with a cordate base and dense soft hairs on the underside. Showy panicles of flowers bear four yellow petals with bright orange bases, and a fifth petal adorned with a deep crimson patch at its base. Thinly woody pods reach 7–12 cm in length.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens, this ornamental species thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes and tolerates both sun and shade. It can be planted to enhance garden landscapes, attracting diverse pollinators like butterflies and bees, and serves as a host plant for butterfly larvae.

Growing notes

Best cultivated in full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation can be achieved by seed, with scarification or brief hot water treatment improving germination rates. As an endangered species, its cultivation aids conservation efforts.
