About

This deciduous to semi-deciduous canopy tree is distinguished by its leaflets on fertile shoots, which are acute to shortly acuminate and glabrous. Its greenish-yellow, scented flowers are borne in axillary clusters, giving way to oval, grooved drupes that ripen to brownish-yellow. The species is typically found in mixed, usually coastal, evergreen forests or thickets.

Where it works in Kilifi

Native to coastal Kenya, this tree thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes, preferring mixed evergreen forests and coastal thickets, often on more alkaline and less well-drained soils. As a large emergent tree, it is ideal for providing shade or as a specimen in larger Kilifi gardens and restoration projects.

Growing notes

Balanites maughamii subsp. acuta exhibits a slow growth rate and is well-adapted to arid conditions, requiring infrequent watering once established, allowing the soil to dry out completely. It prefers bright, direct sunlight and sandy, well-drained soils, showing resilience through resprouting after damage.
