About

Azima tetracantha is a much-branched, spiny, evergreen shrub typically growing 0.5 to 3 metres tall, sometimes adopting a climbing habit. Its stems are often four-angled, bearing sharp, paired axillary spines up to 4 cm long, frequently appearing in whorls of four. It produces small, greenish flowers and translucent white berries, approximately 0.6–0.8 cm in diameter, which are edible.

Where it works in Kilifi

This robust shrub thrives in full sun and well-draining soils, tolerating partial shade and saline conditions common to coastal bushland and sea-dunes in Kilifi. It is an excellent choice for a spiny security hedge, coastal restoration projects, or as a hardy specimen plant.

Growing notes

Azima tetracantha is not fast-growing but is drought-tolerant once established, requiring moderate watering every 2-3 weeks, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Due to its sharp thorns, protective gloves are advised when handling, pruning, or repotting.
