About

This magnificent deciduous canopy or emergent tree can reach heights of 20-60m, featuring a dome-shaped crown and smooth, pale grey bark that exudes a creamy latex when cut. Its leaves are typically oval, 5-16 cm long, with prominent veins. The fruit is an ellipsoid, dull, furry, bright red drupe, about 1.5 cm long, containing a single seed.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal as a specimen or shade tree in large coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes, or for reforestation efforts. It thrives in well-drained soils and full sun, being adaptable to various forest types from sea-level. Allow ample space due to its large mature size.

Growing notes

A fast-growing species, reaching full size within 20 years, with height growth rates of 50 cm per year common in exposed conditions. It requires full light for optimal growth once established and exhibits good self-pruning capabilities. Seeds should be sown immediately after collection as they lose viability quickly. Exercise caution as the latex is toxic and can cause skin irritation; in large quantities, it acts as a myocardial poison.
