About

Angylocalyx braunii is a small straggling tree typically growing 6–10.5 metres tall, characterised by smooth brown to greenish-grey bark and leaves with 3–7 leaflets. It produces racemes of white, cream, pale pink, or mauvish flowers, measuring 1.4–1.8 cm long, from knobs on old wood. The fruit is a velvety brown pod, 10–20 cm long, containing 3–6 seeds. It is native to eastern tropical Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania, inhabiting the understorey of rainforests, dry evergreen, and riparian forests up to 800 metres elevation.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in understorey conditions and riparian forests, suggesting it prefers partial shade and moist, well-drained soils. As it is adapted to seasonally dry conditions, it can be a good choice for coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes. It can be planted as an ornamental specimen or for forest restoration in suitable sheltered locations.

Growing notes

Propagation of Angylocalyx braunii is primarily by seed. It has no known hazards. While its specific growth rate is not detailed in sources, its natural habitat indicates it prefers tropical warmth and can tolerate periods of seasonal dryness once established.
